The grizzly has long been honoured, not only as a symbol of the elusive and powerful wildlife of Canada but also by Canada's First Nations people for thousands of years. They are reverenced not just for their strength, but often with the same respect as a grandfather or cherished ancestor.
This is the second coin in the 1/2 oz silver O' Canada series. The obverse features the Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the words "Elizabeth II D.G. Regina"
The reverse features a design by Canadian artist Glen Loates that captures not just the powerful nature of the grizzly, but also its solitary persona. The coin features a full body profile of a large grizzly from its left side. The powerful musculature and thick neck of the bear showcase its massive size and the silver-tipped fur is beautifully captured with special engraving techniques to bring out the detail. The bear is clambering over a log on top of a lonely, rocky outcropping. It's pointed, short snout gives way to the distinctively massive head and small eyes and ears. The bears head is lowered as it scans the area, likely for food. The landscape also bears the artist's initials. Engraved along the outside are the words "Canada 10 Dollars 2014" and a miniature, stylized profile of a grizzly head.
The Royal Canadian Mint is known as one of the most reputable mints in the world. The Ottawa Branch of the Royal Mint opened in 1908 and was renamed The Royal Canadian Mint in 1931 when control was transferred to the Canadian government. Their high standards for excellence and quality allowed them to be the first refinery to manufacture 9999 fine gold bullion coins in 1982, as well as the first to reach 99999 fine gold purity in 1998.
