• While the Poppy has been Canada’s Flower of Remembrance since 1921, the first ceremony honouring Canada’s fallen soldiers took place in 1919, on the anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War. Known as Armistice Day, this annual commemoration was renamed Remembrance Day in 1931.

DESIGN & ARTIST

Designed by Canadian artist Steve Hepburn, the coin’s reverse honours the memory of Canada’s veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice, as represented by the official Flower of Remembrance, the poppy. Three poppies in full bloom form a reminder of the achievements and sacrifices made by those who gave their lives for their country. The coin’s obverse indicates a face value of “5 DOLLARS” and features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
