The first of four coins in the new, limited mintage reverse proof finished "Birds of Prey" series, the Peregrine Falcon swoops in and makes a striking entrance for the series with its grace and poise. The reverse of this coin features a design by Canadian artist Emily Damstra of a Peregrine Falcon or Falcon peregrinus in flight as it is about to strike.
The Peregrine is roughly the size of a crow with long compact feathers and pointed wings that allow it to reach speeds of more than 200 mph (322kph), making it the fastest animal in the world. The female peregrine, who is larger than her male partner, lays her eggs in a shallow niche that she often scratches out of the side of a mountain. The nestlings will spend the first 35 to 45 days of their life and begin hunting there. At six weeks the nestlings take to the sky and snatch food directly out of their parents talons, until they are finally ready to to leave the nest. This dynamic and revered predator makes a perfect beginning to this aggressive series.
The Royal Canadian Mint is known as one of the most reputable mints in the world. The Ottawa Branch of the Royal Mint opened in 1908 and was renamed The Royal Canadian Mint in 1931 when control was transferred to the Canadian government. Their high standards for excellence and quality allowed them to be the first refinery to manufacture 9999 fine gold bullion coins in 1982, as well as the first to reach 99999 fine gold purity in 1998.
