To celebrate the 2023 Lunar New Year of the Rabbit, the Royal Australian Mint has released a new collection of coins and investment items. The Lunar New Year is an important date that is celebrated by communities worldwide.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS

• Obverse: Features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II encircled by the Lunar Calendar wheel, her name, the year of the release, the country of issue, and the legal tender value
• Reverse: Features the depiction of a rabbit holding a tree branch and surrounded by vegetation, the Chinese character for rabbit, the artist initials and the inscriptions "YEAR OF THE RABBIT" and "1 OZ .9999 Au"

The legend says that the Chinese emperor Jade held a Great Race with animals. The race would determine the first twelve zodiac signs. The first twelve animals to cross a river before the end of the race would be featured in the Zodiac.

The story tells that the Rabbit was too proud of his fast speed. He was a neighbour to the Ox and used to mock the slow pace of the bovine. The Rabbit took off early to the great race and did not see any other animals when he arrived. Assuming he would be the first without much hassle, the Rabbit decided to take a nap; upon waking up, three other animals had already made their way past the finish line, including the Ox, which the Rabbit used to mock. People born in Years of the Rabbit are believed to be sharp-eyed, fast-paced, clever, and creative.
