The 1 oz buffalo copper round is modelled after the historic buffalo nickel, which featured Black Diamond, a massive buffalo that graced New York’s central park zoo as a major tourist attraction. The coin is considered one of the best designs of all time and is featured in multiple bullion items and replicas.

The buffalo design was featured in the Indian Head nickel and became one of the most popular coins of all time, with so much relevance that it still appears in many bullion designs to this date.

The design was created by the United States Mint's artist James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo/American bison seen on the engraving is inspired by Black Diamond, a popular attraction of the New York Central Park Zoo.
