The national flag of the United States of America (referred to popularly as the American flag) consists of 13 horizontal alternating white and red stripes along with a blue canton located on the upper left portion of the flag that is filled with 50 stars representing each of the American states.
The current flag is the 27th version of the design, which was initially introduced during the Revolutionary War as a symbol of the American Revolution and included the red and white stripes along with a union jack inside the blue canton. It evolved to include the stars and stripes and became an important part of American history. The American flag is known around the world as a symbol of freedom and democracy.
